November 21-25

This week is a busy week ahead!  We will be continuing to work on descriptive writing during our Writer's Workshop as well as starting our new Science unit on Changes in Matter.  I am excited to start reading groups again as I have been meeting with students individually for the past few weeks during Reader's Workshop and I think we are all ready to get back into our groups and discuss!  Grade 6 students will be learning how to multiply decimals as we continue through Unit 3 in Math.  We will also be starting our Christmas around the world theme soon with the holidays approaching!  More information to follow :)

Students and parents are reminded that report cards will go home this Thursday November, 24 and that there is no school for students on Friday November, 25 as it is a Professional Development day for teachers.

Have a great week everyone!

October 27

Just a reminder that parent-teacher interviews are quickly approaching as they are being held on November 8th & 9th at our school.  I have sent home a interview time request form, hoping that parents can fill this out with approximate times that would work for them and I will do my best to accommodate you! :)  Please send it back to me with your child once you have it filled out.

On Monday, October 31st, students will be allowed to bring in Halloween treats if they would like to.  They do not HAVE to, but I will be giving them some time to have treats and play some games.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and a safe and happy Halloween!! :)

Just a reminder that this is a short week for students as it is the annual Teacher's Convention on Thursday October 21and Friday October 22 .  This week we will be continuing to work on the Self-Monitoring strategy while reading as well as persuasive writing techniques.  In grade 6 Math, we have started a new unit on Patterns and Equations. We will also be talking about different types of transportation that have existed on Prince Edward Island.

On Tuesday October 18th, we will be having a pep ralley in the morning for our school athletes and all students are encouraged to wear red, black and white.

Have a great week everyone! :)

October 3rd- 7th

This week we have started focusing on persuasive writing during our Writer's Workshop and after much discussion and preparation will begin writing these pieces tomorrow!  In math, we are focusing on Integers for the rest of the week and will be having a Unit 2 test near the beginning of next week.  Social Studies has been interesting with the election happening this week and the students were able to spark some really great conversations regarding this topic as they are very knowledgable about the current election!  Also, don't forget to ask your child about the 'Keyword' of the day.   I would like to thank the students and families for donating money to cancer research through our school with the recent pie throwing event.  Our school was able to raise more than $800 and this is to the credit of the students and their families, so thank-you again! :)  A job well done.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend!

September 19-23

Another week has come and gone!  The time is flying by so quickly!  We have a great class and I am really enjoying getting to know each student daily.  This week in Math (Grade 6) we are working on factoring, finding common multiples and also determining prime and composite numbers.  I have sent home a short worksheet for the students to get some extra practice and for parents to see what we are learning.  We have started working on our first reading strategy out of eight and this is the Self-Monitoring reading strategy.  Students will become very familiar with this strategy and should be using it in their reading daily.  We have started doing research on a person of interest in the computer lab and the students will be writing a biography on their chosen person.  Finally, in Social Studies this week we have taken a short break from election chat to discuss some Prince Edward Island history which the students seem to have a real interest in!

We will be having our Terry Fox Walk/Run Fundraiser next week and if your child would like to throw a pie at their chosen teacher (or teachers...yikes!) it is $5 per pie and the money must be sent into the school by this Friday September 23rd.  I will collect the money and turn it into Mr. Studer.

Hope you all have a great week!  :)

September 12th-16th

The second week of school has been off to a great start!  We had parent information night last night and there was a great turnout.  Thanks to all of you for coming as it was nice to meet so many of you!  This week the grade 6 students will be working on Unit 2, which is all about understanding numbers.  We have started with place value and will be continuing with estimation this week.  The students have also started attending French classes this week as Mrs. Turner and I will be switching for French & Health/Social Studies.  I have started asking the students a set of high frequency upper-elemetary words each day, which I will be correcting and they will be using the words that they do not know to begin their "Buddy Study" process next week.  I know they are very excited about this.  In Social Studies, we have started touching on the election as with the provincial election coming up, this should be an interesting topic!  That's my update for this week.  Enjoy the remainder of these bright, sunny days! :)
